Ngorongoro Crater

Land of Maasai, of their cattle and of the fauna, this protected area is located in the Great Rift Valley, gigantic fracture of the earth's crust. Volcanoes, mountains, plains, lakes, forests and archaeological sites form this magnificent landscape. At 1600 meters alt., the bottom of the crater (265 km2) dotted with watering-holes, shelters almost 30 000 animals in an area naturally enclosed by the slopes of the volcano (but the animals can leave). It's called the eighth wonder of the world.

Best time: whole year - rainy season in April.

How to get there: from Arusha, 4-hour drive or 1 hour charters flight. From Manyara, 2 hour drive.

To do: a trip to the Olduvai Gorge (visit the palaeontology museum) where the Australopithecus Boisei’s skeleton was discovered. This ancestor of man, are a million of years old. A walking safari to Massai country with donkeys (2 days minimum).

Do not miss: a whole day in the crater where the show never stops. Tea time while watching the sunset above the crater.
