Arusha National Park

East of Arusha, this park is divided into three distinct areas: Ngurdoto crater, Momela lakes and Mount Meru. The black and white colobus is the mascot of the park. With the exception of lions and rhinoceroses, you will see all kinds of wildlife and hundreds of different species of sedentary or migratory birds. Hide-outs have been created for observation.

 MOUNTAIN TREKKING

 » Mount Kilimanjaro
 » Mount Meru

Best time: whole year but in April and May, a 4 wheel drive is necessary.

How to get there: from Arusha, a 30-minute drive. The park is on the outskirts off the town.

To do: Mount Meru (4566 m); you climb through a variety of landscapes - a plain, forests, moorlands, and a lava desert - It is compulsory to be accompanied by an armed park warden because of the animals (elephants, buffaloes). From the summit, you will have an impressive view of the crater and 3000 meters below of eruption cone. It's a 3day roundtrip. The best months to climb are from July to February. Drizzles in November.

Do not miss: the climb to Ngurdoto crater, in the forest inhabited by colobus, monkeys. The walk (with a warden) between Kitoto and the Mount Meru crater. A picnic in one of the designated sites
